Fascinating Infosys Days, best wishes for Infy@40

I made an accidental entry to Infosys, while I was looking for options to relocate to my home state (Kerala). It was a too fascinating experience for me than I ever expected. A vibrant environment, filled with actions, a golden mix of long-timers and freshers, a place where the service industry and product industry was contributing to each other, a playground of collective learning and mentoring, etc., etc.

I am extreamly thankful to my close friend and classmate, Satheesh Chandran, for forwarding my resume to Infosys, the tenure at Infosys was really resourceful.

Though I lead people in past, on the technical front, Infosys, helped me to understand that management is a field of art and science. Through well-thought tools like PRIDE, IPM+, and SPC matrices, they equipped middle managers to have their roles fulfilled. 

I left Infosys on misconceptions and dilemmas, which I regret quite often. 

I was much thrilled when iRACE was first introduced without relative ratings. Later, I understood that my reservation about tagging people with relative ratings was the real issue I was facing at Infosys. I was not convinced by the "Bell" curve and the notion of "the ability" of people. I was of the opinion that opportunities and attitude are what make a person jell well and produce magnificent results. Though I could not effectively articulate my reservations well during my Infosys days, now I realize that it was essential to have effective filters and goals to keep a large organization running. On top of this dilemma, a wrong fancy on agility and an unwanted fear of losing my technical skills, fueled me to look for options. Infosys was a very good place to work and still dream that one day I may be able to rejoin the family, which gave me a lot of dignity and reverence.

I got opportunity to work with some of the good leaders, I admire most. Arunima, Suresh NR, Gayas, Poonam, Sudhindra (CG), Subbu... etc.

Apart from my professional gains, I was blessed with a lot many good Infy colleagues, and they continue as my best friends now as well - to name someone - Shino, Vipin, Bhagya, Saritha, Peyush, Saritha, Vidya, Rakesh, Deepu, Tamil, Arun, Sajosh, Sree Devi, Surya, Kiru, Jyothi, Sheethal, Vijay, Mathew, Palani, the Lion batch, and so on.

Wishing you Infosys Family, all the very best, on the occasion of your 40th land-marking year. May the collective wisdom and courage create more success stories and patterns for the world in general and India in particular. 

May Infosys continue as the inspiration for the coming generations and may it be an icon of success with values.

India, belongs to Nehru

Happy Independence Day, all my brothers and sisters of India, May god bless us to be independent, in our thoughts and deeds.

In fact, India, belongs to Nehru, as he represents the very idea of India, every struggle that formed India, and so on...

We live in an India, discovered by Nehru. We love the idea of India discovered by Nehru, that connects past with future, that unites many to one, that represents peace above all. 

If thoughts represented by Nehru was not there, instead of Indian Union, we would have been a collection of independent nations, just like middle east or Europe. Nehru could pave the basic skeleton of unity not only by his writings, but also by his actions. 

Nehru lived in a time when capital based systems and commune based systems were emerging and establishing. He could weigh the highs and lows of both and carefully took a middle path. We could see that he picked only one jargon "socialism" from the spectrum, in his drive for a welfare state. He carefully, nurtured a non-alignment stand that was a ray of hope among furious camps.

He might have realized the pain of exploitation, the capital based system brings in, he might have realized the trauma it introduces via false hopes and alienation. On the other hand he, as well thought by Gandhiji, recognized the commune based proposals are reactive in nature. Time had proven him, all the communist evangelist states were exposed as either ultra nation states or autocratic regimes. As a scholar of all times and statesman of every nature, he thoughtfully placed us in a safe path. 

Let us remember, some of his quotes:

• Without peace, all other dreams vanish and are reduced to ashes
• You don't change the course of history by turning the faces of portraits to the wall
• It is the habit of every aggressor nation to claim that it is acting on the defensive.

Bhagat Sing recognized him as the "revolutionary", as he was quoted saying when Nehru returned after visiting him in jail. Gandhiji said that Nehru will speak his words after independence. Nehru was a leader of devine choice, bestowed upon us for nation building, in every angle.

.. but, how far we are successful in upholding his idea, our India ? Every one of us have to review and retrospect.

Lessons to be learned.. over nationalism may backfire... ?

സർവ്വശക്തനായ ദൈവം, പരിശുദ്ധമായ ഖുർആൻ എന്ന വേദ ഗ്രന്ഥം, ജിബിരീൽ (ഗബ്രിയേൽ) എന്ന മാലാഖ വഴിയായി പ്രവാചകനായ മുഹമ്മദിന്, അദ്ദേഹം ഹീറാ ഗുഹയിൽ പ്രാർത്ഥനയിലായിരുന്നപ്പോൾ, 30 ദിവസങ്ങളിലായി, വാെമൊഴിയായി നൽകി, എന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. ഈ 30 ദിവസങ്ങളാണ് പിന്നീട് റമദാൻ/റംസാൻ എന്ന അറബി മാസമായി ഓർക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്.

വെറും ഏഴു വചനങ്ങൾ മാത്രമുള്ള ഖുർആനിലെ ആദ്യ അദ്ധ്യായം (ഫാത്തിഹ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പ്രാരംഭം) ഖുർആന്റെ തന്നെ ലഘു സാരമായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു, ഏറ്റവും നല്ല പ്രാർത്ഥനയായും. 

ഫാത്തിഹയുടെ ഒരു സ്വതന്ത്ര പരിഭാഷ ചെറു കവിതയാക്കാനുള്ള ഈ ശ്രമത്തിൽ എന്തെങ്കിലും മൂല്ല്യേശോഷണമുണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ അത് എന്റെ മാത്രം കുറ്റമാണ്, ഖുർആനുമായി ഒത്തുനോക്കി മാത്രം സ്വീകരിക്കുക.

കുപ്പിവെള്ളം കൊണ്ടു വരുന്ന "എന്റെ വെള്ളം" എന്ന മിഥ്യാ ബോധം, നചികേതസിന്റെ കഥ, അരബിന്ദോയുടെ കഥ, അങ്ങിനെ എത്രയെത്ര കഥയുള്ള കാര്യങ്ങളും കവിതകളും ചിന്തകളും... ആസാദ്  മോനുമായി മലയാളം പള്ളിക്കൂടത്തിൽ പോയ വഴിയിൽ എനിക്കും കിട്ടി ചില മധു കണങ്ങൾ !!

ഗാന്ധി സൂക്തങ്ങൾ

മനസാക്ഷിയെ ബാധിക്കുന്ന പ്രശ്നത്തിൽ ഭൂരിപക്ഷ നിയമത്തിന് പ്രത്യേക സ്‌ഥാനമൊന്നും ഇല്ല.

Association and mental slavery to cast systems is more dangerous than it to mere belief and/or formal religions. 

One can choose or change affiliation to a particular type of rituals(religion) or understanding/conviction (belief) based on input and thought.

But, cast is stamped by birth and it follows us every where, irrespective of our choice.

We should clearly understand what is cast

Cast is an effective tool for access denial to resources (including access  to education) in the modern society. No religion is above cast, all of them when in control make use of cast system.

Possible transition of Cast

To give a direct reference on great Indian epics, Lord Krishna, while serving the role of upper cast (having more access and control over resources) were not an upper cast by birth. Lord Rama falls in the ancestry of Satyawathi (Mathsyagandhi, who belong to fishermen), but was serving the role of an upper cast. He was even adamant on mixing the cast functions, as then existing work division system was not allowing cross cast functions. But their history shows that systemic elevation and down gradation was in place. Swami Vivekananda also tried to justify cast system on this basis. 

The decline of feudal systems and kingdoms must have paved way to de-linking cast from aptitude and competency; instead it might have started stamping cast at birth time. This would have been beneficial for them in several ways:

• the work force in all sectors might have been assured by the birth based work allocation
• access restriction requirements of wealthy and powerful might have found it a wonderful way to adopt
• it should have been very instrumental in enforcing bonded and forced labor
• etc.  

Later; war prisoners, failed nations etc. might have been lateral entry groups to the lower cast segments (who enjoyed less control and access on resources). This evident all over the world. 

• The Jews were the working casts in Egypt till Moses liberated them. 
• After the decline of Budhist sanghams due to direct attacks from the Western Hoonas and theoretical attack from up rise of rigid Brahmin empires, they might have been converted to lower casts through out India to ensure denial of access.

Example: Above trend is quite evident in several parts of India, for example In Kerala, we can see a complete array of work functions within Ezhava community, indicating that once they were self reliable and later were forced to less access.

The rigid cast system at present (evolved through centuries) is an after effect of this evolution of oppression. Sree Narayana Guru and Ambedkar clearly understood the danger and we have failed to carry the message. Gandhiji, Swami Vivekananda etc. understood the danger but failed to act on the injustice in ground, though they have tried their best in their best understanding. It is not just to align one particular ritual system to cast; rather it was an efficient resource management system of feudal times (kingdoms).

Push for change

Only when we effectively de-link access to resources from birth we could erase cast from our mind.

Reservation is one of the effective tools, as our will is to ensure forced entry to less privileged to some extent. Even-if some well-to-do person from lower cast (by birth) avail its benefits, we should push for it; because the fact is that even the well-to-do individual was unable to grab access without the reservation support - which clearly indicate that he/she is still not competent to get natural access.

The misfortune may not have been happened to Kevin or Athira, if the lower cast backgrounds associated in these incidents were having fare access to resources. For example, if Athira was in affair with son of K.R Narayanan (ex Indian President) or if Kevin was employed as General Manager in Tata & sons; these brutal intentions may not be even coming to the mind of honor killers. It is because, regardless of the birth status, their access and authority on resources might have given ample reasons to accept and glorify the relations.

Hence, these incidents underscores the need for all of us to fight against this access restrictions mechanism and to work for all inclusive existence. 

To materialize our fight the first step for us to realize and convince below basics: 

• CAST is a mere access control system (do not glorify it)
• CAST is not affiliated to a particular sect or religion (its no more others problem)
• CAST is a generic social injustice platform and mechanism (we need to fight for its eradication, like an epidemic)

Injustice for Asifa and other innocent daughters. We gave only injustice; whatever we do, even if we legally kill the cruel culprits or induce pain on them, the injustice on you remains as it is. We failed to protect you. One of the worlds mighty nations... What is the use of strong boundaries? To protect injustice?

This is a hard core crime to deny access. More than rape and religion, its cast. All the recent issues are of growing apartheid... Its a signal failing society, we fail to allow existence of each other.. We are afraid that others will not allow us to exist and are ready to do any crime to nullify "others". The definition of others is volatile, its matter of time, we could be part of others at any time. Growing lack of confidence was the cause of both the world wars. Its time to look for change...

Peace and care are more important than development and profit. We need to work for a more containing system; only if the feel of "us" grows, such hate crimes will reduce. Now, in the environment of fight and competition, hate gets justification from cowardly corners. The only possible solution is to rebuild our national movement, by revitalizing Gandhiji, Ambedkar, Nehru ... like leaders and their lessons.
